Marine Corporal Charles Lindberg, who helped raise the first American flag on Iwo Jima atop Mt. Suribachi was a flame-thrower operator during World War 2. On February 23, at 10:30am, Lindberg and his fellow Marines hoisted the first American Flag on a broken water pipe. Marine Corp photographer Sergeant Lou Lowery captured this first flag-raising on film just as the enemy hurled a grenade in his direction. The controversy came when the Marine commanders, shortly thereafter, decided to replace the first flag with a larger flag. Formal Marine Corps recognition of what happened came years later because Lindberg's story was published. This beautiful piece shows the events of February 23, and is personally hand signed by Charles Lindberg. Measures x x 2. $4.99 Flat Rate Shipping
